The Basics?
Okay, so most of you are just getting started in the photo realm or getting back into it and may be a bit rusty. I know my first challenge might have been a bit tricky for those of you without a camera or a wide array of photos to look through especially when the basic functions of running a DSLR can be overwhelming... trust me, I know! While finding the words can be tricky for even a professional it is still a great exercise for beginners and hopefully having some words or at least goals will help to keep you on a more steadfast track than I was on :) With that I'd really like to touch on topics in a somewhat tutorial fashion so that you all feel welcome to post any questions be it how to set ISO, what dpi means or anything else; how to edit for smoother skin, where to look for good light, how to make sparkly eyes (catch lights), what's a bokeh, how do you get a natural pose, how to deal with grain, what's a filter and are they necessary etc.. Anything! For this post please list any questions you have that you'd like explained or demonstrated and I'd love to get started trying to tackle the technicalities of shooting! I'll use this post as a running tab of things to cover so even down the road you can come back and add something if another question comes up.

here is something I am curious about...what type of metering do you use (for the most part)? Evaluative? spot? I have been experimenting with them and I am interested in seeing what everyone else is doing. :)
ReplyDeleteOoh, good one Lisa! Coming up!
ReplyDeletehelp! - finally getting a new computer today and wish you could just come to my house to help me set it up Ashley! ;)
ReplyDeleteI do not have any editing software other that what just crop or whatever that is that is part of the view on a pc..What is everyone else usin? Is is really necessary to use Lightroom and Photoshop CS5? I want the best for my buck to start but am not sure I want to get the best right away (cost wise). Thoughts anyone?
ReplyDeleteI started with Lightroom and also photoshop elements (pse was only around $70)...I think that is a great way to begin! :)
ReplyDeleteElements for sure. It goes on sale from time to time - watch the coupons if you belong to Costco, and places like Staples. Lightroom is fabulous - once you start shooting RAW (if you aren't already) and shooting mass quantities like weddings.
ReplyDeleteBecca I originally used an older version of Element and it was good but you cannot set up actions on the older ones which are extremely efficient when it comes to editing. Try to get a newer one because I think they do use actions now. Now I use CS5, but right before that I just had Photoshop 7. Which doesn't include all the extra fluff which was nice too. Hope this helps.
