I always use CD+R but I've never had to write the same disc twice so I could just use CD-R. I think, I could be wrong, the difference is that CR+R remains writable even after you've burned something to it while CD-R is a one shot deal. I've had good and bad cases of discs of many different brands. I usually use whatever is on sale but sometimes the generics are riddled with bad discs. Sony and HP are pretty reliable. For weddings I use DVD's just because I end up burning about four DVDs per wedding... if those were CD's there'd be 10!
My back up system is a series of external hard drives. :) I can't stand the constant burning of cds. I just set it to back up while I sleep. I love it.
