Upgrade?

Hello all of your lovely ladies, I am looking to upgrade all of my equipment. I'm starting to take more and more photos and I really think it's time to get serious with my gear.
First order of business, I am wondering what everyone recommends for me to upgrade to. Currently I have a canon rebel xt with the standard canon 18-55mm. It was used before I bought it from Rachel on here a little over a year ago. It's been used quite a bit since then but not too sure of the shutter clicks count:

Next I have a 70-300mm sigma lens, which I have never used. It's huge and comes with a case. I plan on getting rid of it cause it's not really my kind of lens. Maybe upgrade to a 100mm macro lens.
Lastly but definitely not least I have my favorite Canon 50mm f/1.8 lens. I absolutely love this for close ups and just good quality photos. I use this a lot but I am willing to sell all of this to upgrade and then add more later:

So I am just on here wondering what I should do? Should I sell it all and upgrade? What should I upgrade too? I'm thinking the T3 or T3i, I don't want a Mark because that'll be in my way future, just something with a little bit higher quality.

Thanks for looking/listening to all of my rantings  :)

    My favorite review site.

    Have you thought about a 40D or a 50D?

  4. Thanks so much. I'll definitely check out the website.
I haven't looked into either of those. I was looking at the 60d... but I'm just not sure.

  5. The 40D was what I was thinking for you Kat if you don't want a full sensor. That's what a lot of my friends used as their semi-pro camera either as an upgrade to the rebel or instead of. Let me think... if we used ebay as a scale of how much you'll make off your gear we can say your camera body is worth $150-300, the sigma lens is $100-200, and the 50 is worth $70-100. That's roughly between $320 and 600. So lets say you get $450 out of your gear I think you could easily find a 40D for that and then pray your parents are extra generous for Christmas :) Just kidding! (Don't worry people, I've known her parents since I was six :). Looking at the comparison of the new 60D and the old 5D, I gotta say other than the cropped sensor the 60D looks good! Even shoots video! For lenses, if you're upgrading I would say getting the 50 1.4 OR the 85 1.8, I know it's still a 1.8 but its a phenomenal lens and a great precursor to the 85 1.2. The macro lens is the hit! I love mine... LOVE mine! Remember when buying new gear; lenses overshadow bodies at a certain point (learn to get the most out of your camera but then you gotta rely on glass). If I had to sell something right now and downgrade, I'd probably sell my camera body and get a 7D. I love my lenses :) Speaking of the 7D you should check that bad boy out!

  6. I have the T1i and I love it. :) I think the lens matter more, but that is just my opinion. I've had folks shooting with the 5d like my photos better than theirs. I don't think you'd regret the T3i.

  7. Lenses definitely matter more. I highly recommend the 100mm Macro "L" - I had the non-L version and just wasn't that impressed. My dad and I decided to go together on the "L" glass version when I found it online - and now I don't want to share!! It is AH-MAZ-ING!!

The 50 1.4 and the 85 1.4 are great lenses, and in some cases get the same or better reviews than the "L" counterparts.

I haven't tried it yet - but the 24-105 (though only an f/4, not 2.8) is getting rave reviews over the typical go-to 24-70 2.8. If you don't need the additional few stops, I have heard it is faster to focus and sharper than the 24-70.

  8. I think you mean the 85 1.8 Angela? The other nice thing about these lenses, the 50 1.4 and the 85 1.8, as opposed to their fancy schmancy L-series cousins is that they are faster to pop into focus and lighter which is REALLY nice for learning on. And when looking into lenses remember you'll loose a little sharpness with anything that zooms. It's just a bi-product of having the convenience. I'm a prime snob (fixed focal length) ;) Jill did you get your camera yet?! I want to hear a review on whatever you got :)

  9. Sorry - Yes! 85 1.8. I had it and sold it when I got the 1.2/L. I would probably still have the 1.8 had the 100/L been around back then (Or had I known about it!) lol
